Perhaps on rare occasions a yellow shirt. As time progressed and kit designers pushed the boundaries, the goalkeeper bore the brunt of experimental designs, with wacky patterns, and garish colour combinations. Not least at the 1994 World Cup, as miniature sized Mexican shot stopper, Jose Campos designed his own range of kit.

MG Sportswear offer goalkeepers a stylish, and timeless kit choice with the DUO Goalkeeper range. Go traditional with an all Green or all Yellow colour way, or for the more outlandish player put the oppositions forwards off their game with a Flo Pink or Bright Orange choice. Whatever you choose, you will feel like a true number 1 with padded sleeves, padded shorts, and built to last Euro triple ribbed Socks. Finish your kit off with high grade 4mm soft palm gloves available in 3 differentcuts to suit your preference and fantastic value at £25.

The Football Association’s rule 4 states that “If thermal undershorts are worn, they are of the same main colour as the shorts. In response to this M.G.Sportswear has introduced a full spectrum of colours in its Celsius Base layers range, so you need never get caught out by the ref like the unsuspecting players of Bath City Academy.

Trouble flared recently during an FA Youth Cup clash when the referee enforced a little-known rule that players should wear the same colour undergarments as their shorts. He ordered two players from Bath City Academy to change their undershorts – and they could only watch as the opposition scored while they were stripping on the sidelines in front of 200 spectators. The goal sparked a huge ruckus and the ref sent off a player and the manager, followed by two more players in the second half as the uproar continued. At the close of the match the team had seven players left on the pitch when the goalkeeper was also dismissed. Opponents Newport County romped home to a 6-0 win. Furious Bath City FC chairman Manda Rigby fumed “It was farcical. I understand the kit rule but this was an FA Youth Cup match, not a professional FA Cup game. Manda added “ The ref was forced to lock himself in his room after the game for 30 minutes. Eventually he agreed to speak to me. It is fair to say that he claimed he was just sticking to the letter of the law.

If you want to make sure you’re sticking to the letter of the law view the full range of Celsius products online or visit our showroom.

And as another footballing icon falls at the hands of media destruction we wonder can football excellence and a sound moral compass ever be combined anymore. Was it that the greats of the past enjoyed the freedom from the press and didn’t receive the vigourous scrutiny that today’s players receive or was it that the playboy antics of the Goerge Best’s and Frank Worthington’s were actually celebrated? Was it more about what you did on the pitch that mattered? I believe in every true football supporters heart it is still about the performance on the pitch that counts. True supporters will not doubt laugh or sing along with the banter on the terraces, that’s part of psyching out the opposition, but no true supporter will deny an excellent display of skill no matter what the front page of the tabloids say. If a player gets on and does their job I like to believe all the off the pitch antics be forgotten, at least for 90 minutes. Otherwise we could be killing our footballers spirits and confidence with this constant pressure from the media, and in turn killling our game. Whatever your conclusion we at M.G.Sportswear still believe it’s about tackling, passing and scoring goals and the only passion we are interested in is on the pitch!

Amy got to see her drawing be turned from an idea on paper to a kit for her to take home just as anyone can if they decide to create their own kit from our identikit range.

Halas Hawks have just decided to do exactly that and this picture of their new unique home kit modelled by the U’14’s East shows just how effective it can be if you take things into your own hands.

With the outcome of whether the Russell Foster Tyne & Wear mini league can move their playing season to begin in June, break from November, restart mid Feb and finish April looking like it will be given the go ahead, and rumblings that Platini has similar ideas for world football which would mean moving the world cup t0 February –March, the move towards summer football seems to be up for debate and it has provoked two different responses.

As we have encountered two of the harshest winters in the last two years many are agreeing with John Topping, secretary of the Durham FA and a national FA Council member who is backing the Tyne and Wear mini league in it’s move. “It’s simply common sense,” Topping argues. “In effect we are having a winter break anyway, but it isn’t planned and children are becoming very frustrated by games being called off week after week. “Through the summer matches go ahead, people are all in shorts and T-shirts, the pitches are in good condition, the whole atmosphere is completely different and more pleasant

The opposition have several axes to grind many believe we already wrap our children in cotton wool and playing in the winter toughens them up. They are also concerned about how it will affect other sports such as Cricket, Rugby, Golf, Tennis, Athletics. Often grounds are shared between sports or children would have to make a decision between which sport they would play and then would be inactive during the winter break with nothing to do. There are also the staunch traditionalists that believe football has always been a winter sports and should remain so.

Whichever standpoint you take one thing is definite the winters aren’t just getting wetter and colder and children aren’t scared to brave the elements, it was impossible for people to leave their houses let alone get to a football match. If this was to continue then maybe it would be worth looking at a compromise of having an official break for December and January by extending the season until June or reducing the league sizes to reduce the number of matches, so we can avoid the worst of the weather.
